Selective Consciousness my Art/Statement2011/09/12 20:59

While I was randomly walking down the street, I saw movements between visible objects through reflections in which I saw buildings, signs, lights, cars, and trees. My view continuously changed by way of the reflected images in mirrors and windows and they captivated my perception. I gradually gazed into glossy surfaces and my attention finally brought the objects into focus. Then I merely took up the reflected images in which there were indirectly recognizable objects, and I started forming my own aesthetic composition.

Based on the inception of my experience, I explored the convergence of reflected images in mirrors or windows using the lens of a camera as an alternative vision. Photographic work makes it possible for me to reproduce a secondary reality in which images are perceived to have value. The photographic images are actualized to refine my vision altogether and optimize my perspective. My perspective of objects is the implication of vision with my eyes in its material relation to the world. Therefore, a singular perspective, as I see through the lens, embodies my own existence. In this activity, there is only one standpoint where I, as a stationary spectator, am standing and engaging with my entire perception.

My painting is divided into binary parts: the reflected image I select and the outer space of the reflected image I do not select. I cut the actual objects out which directly appear to me and draw invisible objects, reflected from visible objects. The depicting of realistic visible content in a reflective surface corresponds to my perspective, my time and even my emotions when I catch them. I seize the moment immediately with my own consciousness and suggest the abstractive space of my own desire. While the reflected image is elaborately depicted as if the lens of the camera is showing, the rest of the space is filled with solid color smoothly painted. The reflected images I select actualize my existence and represent my consciousness of objects, whereas abstract color, the outer space of the reflected image, indicates either the spiritual or emotional space of my desire and reveals the visual impact with a fictive image by implication. The internal perception of the outer space of reflection has a psychological impact by a filtering of my experiences and absolute contrast with the depicted reflection.

The consciousness of reflected surfaces represents my own engagement in the urban vistas where I currently live and work. I have always been interested in the visual relationship between objects and space from an exploration of reflected images, and I have attempted to refine a mutual relationship between my vision and the reflected objects. In other words, the purpose of my work is to awaken my consciousness of objects and emphasize the relationships among objects. I want to express the structures based on the transcendental cognition in which I find my own existence. I believe the result of my work may be a well-designed creation in order to harmonize contemporary space based on my own view of visible objects.

Selective Consciousness my Art/20102011/01/30 01:37

Artists are influenced regardless of time and place by their view of nature or the value system of the society they belong to. And artists adopt a motive from their experiences, memories or the environment surrounding them, and thereby express it with their own formative language. In the free current of contemporary art, I attempt to explore my own forms while researching into diverse experimentations and expressions.

In a culture dominated by visual images, most people use their eyes to obtain vast amounts of information without the need for direct or close physical contact. In order to realize my formative language, I started looking at objects carefully with the lens of a camera, and I borrowed the term “gaze” to describe the relationship between visual objects and myself. Among the movements of innumerable visual objects, my view converges on reflected images in mirrors and windows and they make me rediscover the modern landscape in which I am living.

This study consists of the following steps: First, I show how to deal with visible and invisible images in which I can find an understanding of my perceptions. Upon analyzing other artists’ artwork, I suggest what I want to express from reflected images. Second, I define the term “gaze” to find a connection between the objects and myself, as a viewer and I explore photographic artwork to support a mutual understanding between the lens of a camera and my vision. I also explore my viewpoint to identify my existence and represent my own engagement in an urban environment. Lastly, I discover my own consciousness through which I select and manipulate reflected images.

Through such a production of work, this study suggests a modern landscape rediscovered through my interpretation of consciousness, and thereupon, puts forward the direction for my future works on new spaces. Lastly, it is hoped that this study will provide a stepping stone for my future creative activities.
